Loyalty represents variety of idea. One of the most important necessity for loyalty is followership and one of the sufficient will be repaying people’s favor. In the last chapter it shows lack of loyalty. Because in chapter 15, Zunaira left Atiq by himself, even though he saved her life by sacrificing one of the most important person in his life, his wife. It shows lack of loyalty in two ways. First, he, Atiq, is not loyal to his wife and let her die for another woman, although his wife wanted to sacrifice herself. Then Zunaira leaves Atiq even though he saved her and wanted to be with her.

When I analyzed loyalty I first I had to think about what loyalty actually is. in order to do this I thought of some clear & simple ideas. Ideas such as: trust, allegiance, faithfulness, and dedication. The ideas that are a necessity to loyalty are allegiance, faithfulness, and dedication. And the one that is sufficient to loyalty is trust.

Loyalty is represented in Swallows of Kabul in Chapter 1, when Mohsen stones the prostitute. By doing this Mohsen stays loyal to his religion and culture, where they believe that a thing like prostitution should be terminated by execution. Although Mohsen himself does not have the same exact morals as the religion does, his action shows the dedication to the religion. Along with Mohsen, Zunaira shows her loyalty throughout the book by wearing the burqa. By being and Islamic women she has an allegiance to the religion and it is necessary rule that she wears the burqa at all times. In chapter six Zunaira was having the most trouble giving up her freedom to the religion by turning in her identity, but she kept she kept her loyalty by staying faithful to the Islamic religion.

In the novel The Swallows of Kabul by; Yasmina Khadra, loyalty is scarce. In this novel I believe that characters spend more time running from themselves and their own issues than they do portraying loyalty to anyone or anything. Loyalty is defined as; a feeling or attitude of devoted attachment and affection. As this definition depicts loyalty is feeling of attachment, throughout the novel there is really only one case of true loyalty and that is the members of the Taliban. These young men have dedicated their lives to their, country, religion, God, and people. When this case of loyalty becomes apparent there isn’t anything else in the book that compares on the same level. The only other loyalty case that really shows is Atiq and his wife Musarrat. Musarrat is sick yet Atiq endures through her problems only because of the loyalty that exists between them. Overall I believe that loyalty may not be a critical trait to the characters of the novel, The Swallows of Kabul, but in the larger picture loyalty is what is limiting and constricting the lives of the characters in this novel.

Loyalty is presented in many ways. My necessity for loyalty is commitment. I believe that it is necessary to be committed to being loyal. It doesn't matter who or what the object is but without being committed, loyalty won't be proven. Opposite of necessity is sufficient. One good example of sufficient is having or showing respect. For an example, you can be loyal to your leaders or friends but it is not necessary to have or show respect to them. You either are too afraid of being too loyal or afraid of the consequence of loyalty. In chapter 12 and 13, the way Atiq showed loyalty to his wife, Zunaira was unacceptable. He wasn't treating her as he should have. Since he had never seen a beautiful girl’s face other than his wife’s, his experience while working at the prison shocked him. He couldn't get over the fact of how she looked and couldn't stop talking about her to his wife. This shows how he has no respect for his wife and all he wanted was to please the imprisoned girl.

When talking about loyalty it is necessary to mention commitment, and it is sufficient to explain faithfulness also. Kwangbok’s point about how Atiq is unfaithful to his wife is true, but I would like to point out the other side of it. “’Take her by the hand and leave, both of you. Go as far as you can, and don’t look back.’ ‘You’re asking me to go away, Musarrat?’ ‘I’d throw myself at your feet if I thought that would persuade you.’ ‘I will not abandon you.’ ‘I don’t doubt it, but that’s not the question.’” (168-169) This quote shows the loyalty Atiq and Musarrat have for each other. Although Atiq deeply wishes to leave with the beautiful imprisoned woman, he would never suggest anything like that in front of his wife, the woman who saved his life, unless she brought it up first. This is an example of faithfulness. Faithfulness and loyalty go hand in hand, because faithfulness is what cements most relationships. Commitment is what is most necessary in loyalty. Atiq’s wife is willing to commit her life to saving a woman, to make her husband happy. She sees she has no greater purpose and can make that sacrifice. This type of commitment is an example of true loyalty.

As far as I consider, the clear and simple ideas of Loyalty can be described in these five terms, relationship, trust, the feeling of love, steadfastness, dedication and honest. Among these five terms, relationship and steadfastness are necessary. Loyalty is intentional, which means that it must have an object to be loyal to. In the other words, people need a relationship with one object which is available for loyalty. For example, in Taliban’s culture, each woman who has married must be loyal to her own husband. This loyalty is on the premise of that one woman has a relationship with one man. And, steadfastness is necessary for loyalty. In the book, The Swallows of Kabul, all the people in Kabul are forced to be loyal to the religion. During the congregation in the mosque of Kabul, Mullah Bashir emphasized the right attitude to their religion---“There is no doubt”. Thus it can be seen that loyalty must based on the attitude of steadfastness. If anyone shakes a conviction on what he/she should be loyal to, there is no loyalty any more.

Loyalty is a broad concept that portrays a deep and profound meaning. When I first hear the word loyalty, I think of trust and reliance, and respect. An example of when loyalty is shown in Swallows of Kabul is in Chapter 12. Atiq expresses his interest in Zunaira to Mussart, she remains calm and collective although she is hurt that her husband has interest in another woman. Through his giddiness and pettiness about Zunaira, she does whatever it takes to make him happy. When he tells about how Zunaira barley has anything to eat, Mussart offers to make her a meal. Atiq says, "You'd do that for her?" and Mussart replies, "I'd do anything for you." Despite the many obstacles, vicissitudes, and faults in their relationship, Mussart always remains faithful and do whatever she is capable of doing to make Atiq happy. I think this is true loyalty and I commend Mussart for staying by Atiq's side through everything.

As Fred Reichheld said that loyalty is the willingness to make an investment or personal sacrifice to strengthen a relationship. I believe that loyalty is to show faith and devotion to other people or groups. In SOK, it is obvious that majority of people in Kabul were force to show loyalty, believing in Islam. We can see that from the sermon, only people from the first row were interested in the speaking but the rest of them were forced to come. In addition, we can also see that women have to show loyalty to their husband all the time. For example, although, Atiq's wife was sick, she still had to complete her duties, showing loyalty to her husband.

In the novel “The Swallows of Kabul’’, by Yasmina Khadra, the idea of loyalty is deeply explored. This word represents more than a simple definition, as it helps tie each chapter together. As I define this term I begin with a list of the clear and simple words and ideas that first spring up in my mind. This list consists of words such as trust, relationship, faith, respect, and reliability. Now as we judge these words in a more specific and close analysis, we can break them up into two categories. These two categories of what is necessary and sufficient help define the word better. For loyalty, trust is not exactly necessary for it to occur but it is surely sufficient. Trust along with faith, respect, and reliability would fall under the sufficient portion of the definition. Something that is necessary for there to be a type of loyalty is a relationship of some sort. Loyalty can’t be present without a specific thing to be loyal too or a connection between two or more people or things. This illustrative definition of the word loyalty is directly related to the novel throughout the chapters. Loyalty is seen as early as chapter one when Mohsen participates in the stoning of the accused prostitute. Even though this was completely against Mohsen’s personal morals and he regretted it after, he still stayed loyal to his religion and the group of men participating in the stoning. This was a reappearing theme throughout the book. In chapter thirteen Atiq decides to go to Qassim’s house to try and free Zunaira. This is a great example of how loyalty is used in the novel because even though Atiq could lose everything he has he still risks it all for Zunaira. In both of these examples of loyalty the idea of relationships and a connection between two or more people is present. In conclusion the word loyalty can be closely analyzed through specific examples in “The Swallows of Kabul”.

Loyalty can be expressed through other words, such as, devotion or faithfulness. In Swallows of Kabul, there are examples of both. In chapter 12, Atiq displays his affection for Zunaira to Mussart, instead of getting upset with Atiq she remains cool-headed and patient in order to not upset her husband. She does this because she is truly devoted and cares about his feelings and doesn’t want to make the situation worse for him than it already is. Although this novel expresses many instances of loyalty, it also shows a lack of loyalty as well. For example, when Nazeesh decides to pack up and leave Kabul forever, it shows a lack of loyalty to his friends. Even though he is elderly and does not have many friends, he still should have remained loyal to his few friends and tried to tough-out the situation with them.

When I examined and analyzed the concept of loyalty I came to the conclusion that it needs three basic elements: devotion, faithfulness and followership. When reading Swallows of Kabul I realized the story revolves around a controversy created by loyalty to a religion; Islam. The characters are involved in a conflict between their own thoughts and those ideals implemented by the Taliban.
The characters in the story are loyal to their religion, and those strict rules set by the Taliban. One example of this is the conflict that Atiq goes through in the last chapters. When Atiq stands between the option of strictly following the rules or setting the prisoner free, he is confronted by a controversy of loyalty; should he follow the rules or not.
The concept of loyalty in this example combines and implies the three necessary elements of loyalty mentioned above. The example of Atiq is simple described by followership that in this case could be used as necessary or sufficient.
