Blog Post: Being Right
In your blog response tonight, I want you to answer the following question:
In many debates, many people think they are right. Why do people think they are right? What does it mean to be right? How do we know when we are right?
In my personal opinion being right can have many controversies according to the situation. For me being right means to know and have prove that what is being said is correct and has grounded proofs that it is correct. On one hand, people may think they are right just because they strongly believe on what they say or do. Sometimes this may bring conflict, like in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, in which both sides strongly believe that one has the right to the land. However, this is just an example and I don’t want to go too in depth with it. On the other hand, when people know they are right, just by the fact that what they say is proven, it is easier to be in accordance with their opinions. People might think they are right, just by the human instinct of acting according to what is better for oneself and the majority of people implicated.
I believe that people think they are right because it makes situations and conflicts easier if you happen to be the one that is right. I think that humans have a natural want to be right, this also adds to the reason of people believing they are right. For example, if I'm arguing with someone I try to do everything to be right, and in other cases I have even lied to win the argument. Being right is something I personally strive for. I feel like one can only truly know they are right if they have factual or evidence of their argument and there is nothing to disprove it.
I believe that many people consider themselves to be right based on a scare of being wrong causing people to constantly defend their opinion thinking they are right. In order to sprout these ideas of being correct people base them on their personal experiences or persuasions from what their family members consider being right. This can be seen in Persepolis when Marji left to attend a protest without permission based on her idea that it was right because her parents had been protesting during the Iranian revolution. In a situation where there are multiple answers or opinions I believe it is impossible to determine what is truly correct. An example of this would be asking if God is real, however, a contrary example would be a math equation where there is only one answer to be right about. You know your right if there is only one answer to the question or if you are truly willing to believe in your statement for your entire lifetime. People will always disagree but you have to believe in what you think is right in order to inspire others.
Being right is a way people know that they have done something correct for themselves. In my personal opinion, I feel that there are two types of being right. One type of being right is to know a basic fact or knowing something that has already been proven by great experts in different fields. For an example, one plus one is two or a dog has four legs. These are things that we know is right for a fact. The other type of right is making the right choices or right decisions. Knowing your right from your wrong will help make sure you are doing the right thing. When people get complemented on doing the right thing or knowing the right answer, they have a positive attitude about being right. But it is hard to be right all the time and that’s why we have to learn from our past mistakes and turn it into something that is right.
In order to be "right," one has to have enough information to back up their point. Many people believe that they are right based off of experience or beliefs. What it means to be right is that you have a thought about something and you have information to back it up. We know when we are right if we have proven our point or been agreed with on something. Also, like Fede stated, it's easy to think you're right based off of personal instinct. People get a feeling in their "gut" that they are right about something.
I think people think they are right because they are confident, and they think they have very convincing reasons that would prove that they are right. And different kind of debates can also make people think differently. In a debate over some very serious topics, such as the video we watched today about the debate between Israel and Palestine, the result of this debate could change thousands and hundreds of people’s life. So it is important for both sides to stick with their guns, they have to think they are right no matter what. “To be right” for me means that it is not necessary to be correct, we could lie to someone and they could think we are right. And there are a lot of lies that is out there which we have no clued they are lies. We can convince people that we are right by laying, we could also convince people by showing the evidence. But it is much harder. For me, to find out whether we are right or wrong, we need 3 steps. First of all, we should never try to find out this question when we are angry or when we feel like we are being radical. I always clam myself down first then try to think. Secondly, we should try to be natural, or even try to accept our opponent’s ideas. And then, we would able to know whether we are wrong or not.
People believe they are right because that is what they believe to be correct. If people think they are right then they are willing to create conflict to prove that they are right, or else it would go uncontested that they are right. Mainly people think that they are right because it is what they have been taught or told. Someone has showed them to what they believe to be right. What it means to be right is that the truth of what is at matter is presented and argued for and finally what is agreed upon that is better for something than something else. We know we are right when no can even try and disprove you.
We never actually know if what we believe, think, or say, is right. There are so many sides and variables to being right. If we relate this to the video we watched in class, Promises, every religion thinks they are right. Really they are fighting over the same thing which could be easily resolved yet they continue to fight for their religion because they think they are right. How do they even know they are right, it was their Grandparents and Great Grandparents that were involved in the true conflict. These people are in conflict because they believe in a higher power which may or may not even exist. This does not just apply to the people in the middle east, there are many individuals around the world that believe in what was once believe by someone else. With all this being said it really only leads me to one point and that is, is anyone really right?
